Welcome to the Education, Technology & Culture Lab — also referred to as the etcetera lab. The etc. lab is directed by Dr. Fernando Rodriguez, Assistant Professor of Teaching, in the School of Education at UC Irvine.

Our lab studies the impacts of technology-centered learning on student attitudes and behaviors. These settings include online courses, cloud-based collaborative work, social learning platforms, and using AI tutoring systems.

We also study how technologies impact the culture of learning; the values, attitudes, and practices students have towards studying and collaboration. Finally, we consider how social learning platforms can be used to promote collaborative online international learning and global engagement.

Our work is informed by cognitive and motivational theories and we use a variety of approaches (learning analytics, eye-tracking, large language models) to analyze learning behaviors and outcomes.
The etc. lab is tailored towards training undergraduates in research design, statistics, and programming in R.
